Nervous Entanglement

a cybernetic a/v performance by Korhan Erel and Malte Jehmlich/sputnik

Are robots helping us or are we helping them? Visual performer Malte Jehmlich and musician/composer Korhan Erel pretend to answer this question using an overly complicated cybernetic system of two overhead projectors with transparency foil loopers and servo animatronics, and a robotic arm, which interact via sensors and control signals with a sound setup consisting of a modular synthesizer and other sound devices. This very own take on the current hot topics of robotics, AI and transhumanism uses current and outdated media technologies with references to puppetry, toys and shadowplay. The setup creates a human-machine symbiosis, where errors and malfunctions are almost pre-programmed and always purely consensual….

Malte Jehmlich and Korhan Erel met in 2018 for a first audiovisual improvisation at moers festival and extended their collaboration in 2019 with NERVOUS ENTANGLEMENT.

Erel works with recordings, analog and digital sound creation and processing methods, and has always been interested in the connection of sound and moving image. They collaborate with video artists, dancers, theaters, performers. They have played in festivals, music venues, museums, art spaces in Europe, Asia and North America.

Jehmlich, together with his collective sputnic – visual arts, creates analogue and tactile performances that bridge animation, media art and performing arts.
